100 YEARS

Posted by St Philips Theological College on September 27, 2013 at 12:40 PM

It is all exciting and it certainly is a milestone. The college started 100 years ago in November 1914 founded by a Canadian missionary (T.B.R Westgate). He was sent by CMS to what was then Tanganyika Territory, to start training local church leaders. A college was founded, Huron College, later to be St Philip's Theological College as it is known today. Since then many staff members from all around the world taught, administered and served in many ways making the college what it is today. We are grateful to them for their commitment and initial efforts.

It is a time to remember, a time to honour, and a time to give thanks for all God has been doing in the church in Tanzania and beyond through theological training. St Philip's has produced thousands of good quality theologians and pastors, most of whom have held prominent positions in the Anglican church of Tanzania and beyond. Within the Anglican Church of Tanzania alone out of the five archbishops we have had, two have come out of St Philip's as student and as staff, not to mention the other bishops and pastors. It is the time to thank all our partners from within the country and from abroad who have maintained the sending of staff and the support of students to this present day.

With these celebrations we have an ambition. Our ambition is to raise 3 billion Tanzanian Shillings (£ 1,200,000 or Euro 1,500,000 or US$ 1,875,000) to be used for

a. Rehabilitation of buildings

b. Building a new training and resource centre

c. Building a health centre

d. Improving the courses we are offering by recruiting staff and attract quality students

e. Promote new courses such as language and computer training (although our aim is still primarily training and equipping pastors to be relevant to the changing context).

We are making an appeal to all who wish to take part in this exciting and challenging future of the college. Our greatest appeal is to God who is the Lord of the harvest, to look down with mercy and compassion as we lift our prayers to Him.

As college community we call for you to join us in the following events:

a) One Sunday a month until November 2014 we have a special offering towards the Centenary

b) On Sunday 24 November 2013 we have a fundraising event at the college. We welcome your contribution or a repeat event from your church or parish.

More events will follow and we will keep you posted. Pass this on to anyone you know who has a link with us. We will soon open up links in one of the social networks with plans to start an alumni association. As you read this you could be one of the founding members if you join membership in this website. Please send us you contact email address.

Our task is to be like Jesus. He said to His disciples, 'I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent' (Luke 4:43). This is what represents the ministry and vision of St Philip's and past, present and future members of the community.
